Term of Office
The term of office for all members of council is four years, which typically commences at the first meeting following the election. The Councillors for the even numbered divisions are elected in one election and two years later the Councillors for the odd numbered divisions are elected. The Reeve is elected the same year as the election takes place for Councillors for the odd numbered divisions. For example, odd numbered divisions plus the Reeve will be elected in 2024 and their term will be four years. The election for the even numbered divisions will take place in 2026 and their term will be four years from that date. This allows for staggered elections and continuity on Council.
Nomination Day
The nomination period begins when the Returning Officer publishes and posts the Call for Nominations (usually no later than the early part of September). Nominations may be filed any time during regular office hours from the time the call for nominations is posted until the deadline of 4:00 p.m. on Nomination Day, which is usually the end of September.
